38 – Why Are You a Leonberger?

We have another request! This week we talk about the Leonberger, the giant breed from Germany that was bred to look like another animal (probably). Which seems like a complicated solution to a simple problem. The guy who created this breed really loved large animals and was a great marketer, but didn’t live long enough to see the breed truly come into their own.

As with most dogs, especially German dogs, the two World Wars took a toll on their numbers. They’ve made a comeback recently and their numbers are increasing across Europe and America. Did you see our Facebook post recently? If you did, you know these guys are the Tom Cruise of the dog world and do their own stunts. They jump out of helicopters and save people who have no business swimming!

Outro song is Take Me Higher by Leon Berger.

35 – Why Are You a Swedish Vallhund?

Oh my god, who was hiding the Vallhund from us all? Properly referred to as “Swedish” Vallhund, these puppers look like a corgi husky hybrid dog. So essentially, have the body of corgi, but the coloring of a husky or a wolf. Unsurprisingly, the Vallhund and Corgi have some sort of shared history, but what it might be, is unclear. So yeah, it’s one of those dogs that no one really knows much about!

Although not much is known about the Vallhund, they have been around for at least a thousand years. They were more than likely used by vikings for all farming purposes, and may or may not have a hand in the creation of the corgi. I doubt they rode around pillaging villages, but it does make for an amusing image. These dogs are rather new to the AKC and still incredibly rare in the United States and only has 10 states with registered breeders.

Caitlyn tries her damnedest to struggle through some Swedish words, and Kyle shares his personal experiences with the language. The episode also eventually breaks down into who does the most work, and thus who deserves the most titles.

Song for this episode is “Watch it Crash” by Toh Kay. (Listen to the episode and it will make sense).

34 – Why Are You a German Shepherd?

German Shepherds, I don’t think we have to ask why you’re a dog. They’re almost ubiquitous with the whole idea of dogs. Seriously, you see a dog doing an actual honest to goodness job, making a living, it’s more than likely going to be a German Shepherd. Also, some of the more famous dog actors are German Shepherds. They also enlist in the military, work on the police force, and even take long stints as personal tour guides. They’re not really good at guiding though, go check out the Labrador episode for that though.

Unlike some other dogs, this one actually is from the country of origin that is given in it’s namesake. I’m looking at you so-called “Australian Shepherd”. Although in the scheme of history, they haven’t been around too long, they’ve certainly made an impact on it. Although burdened with the world wars, they somehow remained popular, and are one of the most popular dogs around (at least in the United States.)

In this episode, the dog talkin’ duo get a little bit too Monday, so be prepared for extra comedy, and a lot of word issues. Kyle tries to retell a “humorous” story, and naturally forgets important things in the telling of. All in all, this was an episode. This episode was also requested (kinda. . . ) by Jane DS of twitch Justin.tv and Twitchin’ Kitchen fame, so thanks, Jane!

Outro song is “German Shepherd Dog Song” by Luke Farrugia. Probably. It was made for the German Shepherd dog tips group on Facebook, apparently.

22 – Why Are You a Shih Tzu?

Happy Year of the Dog! For the Lunar New Year, we’ll be doing a series on Asian dogs and the first week is all about the Shih Tzu. We tackle the question of what is a Shih Tzu? So many names for such a small dog. You’ll be surprised to know that the dog is not pronounced “Shit Zoo”, as we all think it is, but pretty much exactly how it’s spelled.

This episode has eunuchs, lions, casual racism and a ridiculous pronunciation guide. Kyle and Caitlyn also learned new medical terminology, and think it would be a great band name. What is it, you ask? You’ll just have to listen!

Outro song is The Shih Tzu Song by Backyard Haircuts.

18 – Why Are You a St. Bernard?

St. Bernard, drawn by "Kevin of Miserable Hair People"We’re back from vacation! Hope everyone had a happy Christmas and New Year. This week take on the task of giving information and the history of the St. Bernard, which is a gentle giant that had incredibly important dog job. We may all know about the ubiquitous St. Bernard barrel but did you know that it may not be good for search and rescue? We also discuss how their size can be a hazard, and Kyle manages to bring up Pokemon twice in this episode. Kyle and Caitlyn also talk about a badass St. Bernard sailor who made sure all of his comrades came home safe and has more military honors than Carter has pills.

Outro song is Saint Bernard by Ron Sexsmith.

16 – Why Are You a Jindo?

Jindos, why are you a dog? This is WAYAD’s first truly Asian breed and we have now covered four of seven continents! If you’ve never heard of a Jindo, don’t worry. You’re in good company. Most people outside of Korea have never heard of them either, because they’ve very hard to find outside of the county.

This week, Caitlyn apologizes for being salty at the end of the last episode, and vows not to say any Korean words out of spite. It doesn’t actually work out that well for her. Kyle is in his element talking about Korea, and shares a really terrible, condensed version of the Korean people origin myth which is not to be missed if you want to be confused.

Outro song is Gee by Girl’s Generation.

13 – Why Are You an Australian Shepherd?

Happy Thanksgiving! This week on the podcast Caitlyn and Kyle take you on a journey in their longest episode yet. A journey that includes an arguments about the opening about the show, a misnamed dog, a lot of topography, and some unnecessary information about crofts. Be sure to listen to the very end of the episode for some bonus content that didn’t quite make it into the greater context of the show!

This week’s outro song is The Aussie’s Cowboy Song (Australian Shepherd) by Nancy Simmonds on her album Musical Tails, 2nd Litter.

11 – Why Are You an Alaskan Malamute?

Alaskan Malamutes, why are you a dog?! Caitlyn and Kyle recorded this episode immediately after the Bluetick Coonhound episode, so there’s wasn’t any listener mail this week…until there was.

This week Caitlyn has a hard time pronouncing indigenous people’s names (shocker), and talks about how the breed is one of the oldest dog breeds around. Caitlyn and Kyle also talk about a terrible occurrence that nearly wiped out the breed entirely, so hug your Malamute tightly if you have one. They also discuss how they look like bears, and their heroic deeds in expeditions and  medical emergencies.

Outro song is “Malamute” by Samoyed.

5 – Why Are You a Schnauzer?

Schnauzers, why are you a dog?! Happy (early) Dogtoberfest! Caitlyn and Kyle will be doing a new German dog every week starting this week and through the whole month of October.

This week is Schnauzers! They’re multipurpose, dog-of-all-jobs dogs who are true utility players. The only thing they can’t do is yarn crafts. It’s also a 3-for-1 episode since there are three sizes of Schnauzer and they all do different dog jobs. Learn about their heroics in WWI and WWII, as well as a dog that led to some celebrity violence, and enjoy a brand new segment on funny dog show names!

Outro song is You’re So Irresistible (Miniature Schnauzer) by Nancy Simmonds off her album Musical Tails, 2nd Litter. (Guys, we just really like Nancy Simmonds.)

4 – Why Are You a Pomeranian?

Pomeranians, why are you a dog? Caitlyn and Kyle discuss the inevitable royal history of the Pomeranians (you knew it was coming!), marvel at how many color combinations they have, and joke about how they’re bringing the entire dog economy down.

There weren’t any corrections this week, but boy will there be some next week. Make sure you follow WAYAD on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @whyareyouadog, and send any emails to whyareyouadog@gmail.com. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts!

Outro song is Pom Pom Get a Pom by Nancy Simmonds off her album Musical Tails, 2nd Litter.
