The Lhasa Apso, is a dog of surprising feats. You look at it and just assume, “Ah yes, you are just a dog of no substance.” Wrong. There’s this little ol’ thing you may have heard of called, “Dalai Lama” whose soul will possess a Lhasa Apso while waiting to become human again. Yeah, the leader of Tibet is technically a dog for a little while. Honestly, I would love it if we had the option to vote for a dog every so often. Cause if a dog got to be King of America, if you have a bad opinion, you’re just gonna look like an jerk.
Besides their history with the Tibetan ruling class, this breed is very old. In fact, the link between the Lhasa and the wolf is a very short link. The more I learn about genetics, the more I don’t understand genetics. I look at a wolf and the Lhasa, and I have to assume something happened between them. Turns out, that something wasn’t a lot. They’re also known for their long hair “show cuts” which looks a lot like human hair. Probably just as annoying as having long hair as well, showing up wrapped around your foot, or in your clothes.
This episode, Caitlyn goes on a tirade about birds. In case it somehow has not come out at this point, Caitlyn doesn’t like birds. As pets, specifically. I have seen her enjoy pictures of cute birds, and she has a LOT of owl stuff in the apartment. So. . . it’s complicated I guess.

This week we discuss the Shar Pei! For our second Lunar New Year dog, we’re giving you another dog from China that almost went extinct during the Communist Revolution. They’re super distinct with their rolls and hippopotamus features, which I’m sure was extra fun for Kevin to draw this week. We also talk about the best event to take place all year: The Puppy Bowl! Kyle gives a pretty good run down of events, which you won’t want to miss.
Outro song is Forgetting We’re Growing Old (The Shar Pei Song) by Daniel Hainault.
Happy Year of the Dog! For the Lunar New Year, we’ll be doing a series on Asian dogs and the first week is all about the Shih Tzu. We tackle the question of what is a Shih Tzu? So many names for such a small dog. You’ll be surprised to know that the dog is not pronounced “Shit Zoo”, as we all think it is, but pretty much exactly how it’s spelled.
This episode has eunuchs, lions, casual racism and a ridiculous pronunciation guide. Kyle and Caitlyn also learned new medical terminology, and think it would be a great band name. What is it, you ask? You’ll just have to listen!
Outro song is The Shih Tzu Song by Backyard Haircuts.
Pugs, why are you a dog?! This week, Caitlyn helps Kyle unravel the royal history of the Pug, which includes espionage and dog-sized pantaloons. Pugs are our first brachycephalic dog, and Caitlyn runs through the laundry list of health concerns pugs have (It’s a long, loooooong list), and talk about the most famous pug on the internet. She also helps change Kyle’s mind on why pugs are actually pretty cool dogs.
Caitlyn and Kyle also challenge listeners to an art contest, where they briefly (and poorly) describe Caitlyn’s dog Willie and ask for art submissions on what listeners think he looks like. All of their personal friends who have seen Willie are excluded from this contest, which means they probably won’t have any submissions. Assuming there are any submissions, winners will be revealed on Episode 15 and the prize of warm and fuzzy feelings will be awarded.
Outro song is Pug Song from the Super Delux YouTube channel.
